Obituary

Maurice was born December 14, 1950 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Anton and Clara van Nes. He was the youngest of four siblings: Patricia, Reginald and Dale. He grew up and attended school in Hepburn, Saskatchewan. In his teens he accepted Christ as his Saviour, was baptized, and became a member of the Hepburn Mennonite Brethren (MB) church where he enjoyed singing in the church choir and participating in youth group.

Throughout his years at home, he was often found at the Hepburn Trading Company store owned and operated by his parents. As is typical in a “general” store he often had general duties and functioned as clerk, shelf stocker, pick up and delivery driver, all around schekjbenjel, and whatever other jobs his Dad found for him.

At the encouragement of his Mom, he enrolled in a drafting class and found he enjoyed the challenge. He continued on to Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Moose Jaw graduating with an architectural draftsman diploma.

Memories of Maurice

"Dear Pat and family, I'm so sad to hear about my cousin Maurice. He was always so kind to me when I stayed in Hepburn. And he was fun. I remember him taking Laurie and me to a movie and for pizza in Saskatoon - we thought we were so grown up. I will never forget how you and Maurice drove thru blizzards to come to my Dad's funeral. That was so kind. May the Lord give you His peace. Love from Sally May the Lord give you His peace and comfort."

"Dear Pat and family, I am so sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. He lived a full life and you will miss him. May you find comfort in knowing that he is in a better place and you will see him in Glory. Reading his story brought back many memories of Hepburn. I will keep you in my prayers. "

"It was largely due to the encouragement of Maurice and Pat that Harold and I went on a cruise with some of our friends. It was truly an amazing experience and of course, because Maurice and Pat were such seasoned cruisers, they helped all of us with the ins and outs of the whole experience. And we had such a good time! Now that we know how short Maurice's time with us would be, I'm so glad we had the opportunity to do this together with them. We will certainly miss Maurice - camping with them, having dinner club with them, and just sitting together and visiting. Pat, we wish you God's peace as you learn to live life without Maurice."

Pat & family: Ardelle and I extend our condolences to you as you mourn and celebrate the life of one who was a cherished colleague and friend. Maurice was always respected for the professional and person that he was as well as the folksy warmth or perspective he could bestow to any situation. He inspired by the way he lived his life and was witness to the faith that was so much a part of him. I am most grateful that I had the opportunity to reconnect with him over the past 2 months. I'm confident he is regaling the heavenly hosts with yarns and Maurice-isms that we were so fond of as well as preparing rooms for all of us to join him on the Grand Cruise.
